Sen. Jim Tracy is a 1978 graduate of The University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in Agriculture Education.

For the past 17 years, Sen. Tracy has owned and operated Jim Tracy Insurance in Shelbyville, with an office in Murfreesboro for three years. Prior to owning his own business, Sen. Tracy was a science teacher and coach. From 1996-2004, he was a member of the Bedford County Board of Education, serving as vice-chairman for five years. He is a member of the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club and the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. Sen. Tracy has also been a TSSAA and NCAA basketball official for over 15 years.

Sen. Tracy’s mother is a retired school teacher from Hardin County and his wife, Trena, worked as a teaching assistant for 16 years. His father is also a former teacher and retired from the UT Extension Office.

Sen. Tracy’s legislative accomplishments include voting for BEP 2.0 which put millions of new dollars into education in Rutherford County, voting to increase teacher pay, voting to increase the state’s share of health insurance so families don’t have to bear the enormous cost, and increasing the award amount for the HOPE scholarship. Sen. Tracy was also the prime sponsor of the bill that banned smoking in all public places, including restaurants.

Sen. Tracy was elected in 2004 to serve Rutherford, Bedford, and Moore counties. In 2007, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Sen. Tracy also serves on the Senate Education and State and Local Government Committees.

Sen. Tracy and his wife, Trena, have been married for 31 years and have three sons, Chad, Craig, and Connor. He is an active member and deacon at Fairlane Church of Christ.
