Sen. Tracy warns of GED SCAM

(NASHVILLE, TN) – State Senator Jim Tracy (R-Rutherford, Moore and Bedford Co.) warned citizens today of a GED scam aimed at taking advantage of those trying to gain their general equivalency, or general education, diploma.  Tracy said the American Council on Education’s (ACE) General Education Development Testing Service™ (GEDTS) has issued a warning for Tennessee of various entities claiming to offer GED exams online or through the mail.  GEDs can only be taken at the official GED testing centers.

“It is a shame that there are those who would prey on citizens who want to receive their GED,” said Tracy.  “The person scammed may spend hundreds of dollars just to find out that the documentation is not valid.  The GED cannot be issued via the Internet or through correspondence programs.  It can only be taken at the official testing centers.”

The GED Tests, developed by GEDTS, require extensive preparation and the demonstration of a high level of high school knowledge and academic skills.   In Tennessee GED tests are administered via Official GED testing centers across the state.  For a location in your community go to www.gednow.info.  The Official GED Practice Test is required prior to taking the GED.  Free GED prep classes are offered in every county in Tennessee.

“These scam artists may find that it is a Class A misdemeanor offense carrying 11 to 29 months and up to $2,500 to falsify these records in Tennessee,” he added.  “Hopefully, the public will be advised that these con artists are soliciting their products falsely and will not purchase these fake Internet or correspondence programs.”
